First Baptist Carrollton History
First Baptist Carrollton was formed on December 16, 1909. One of the first actions taken by the church on that evening was the collection of an offering to be given for missions. The church received a total of $8.10 in cash and pledges. This initial offering established a vision and priority for missions that remains an important part of First Baptist Church of Carrollton still today.
Over the years, God has blessed First Baptist Carrollton with many godly men of Christ-like character to serve as its pastor. The church's first pastor was Rev. F.A. Whiteley, whom the church called on January 23, 1910. He led the church to construct a permanent building at 1017 Erie Street in downtown Carrollton.
The church has called many other men whom God has used to lead First Baptist Carrollton over the years. They have been men who loved God and devoted their lives to serving Christ. This love and devotion is evidenced by the words and challenges issued by them, as seen in these examples:
Rev. Eugene Moore (1946-1947) placed this statement in the weekly church announcements: "Thou art welcome, whosoever thou art that interest this church. It is thy Father's house; come in the spirit of reverence; worship in the spirit of humility; and leave it not without a prayer to God for thyself, for those who minister, and for those who worship here."
Rev. Thomas B. Quinn (1951-1954) had the following motto: "We preach Christ Crucified, Risen and Coming Again."
Rev. Wayne L. Allen (1965-1999) preached his first sermon as pastor of First Baptist Carrollton on June 6, 1965, entitled "My Dream for Our Church." His dream was that First Baptist Carrollton would become known for her message of Jesus Christ, her mission to tall the world, and her method of love.
First Baptist Carrollton moved to its present location at 2400 North Josey on March 30, 1986, Easter Sunday. The opening day of the new sanctuary was an exciting day as the building filled to overflowing with 2,655 people. At the end of the special service, almost 30 people made decisions either accepting Christ as their Savior, joining the church, or being baptized.
Our Present
Today, First Baptist Carrollton continues to grow and serve God in multiple ways. Our pastor, Dr. Brent Taylor, continues to lead the church in the same godly and God-serving way as his predecessors. Average attendance at Sunday morning worship is approximately 1,600 people each week.
Despite its size, First Baptist Carrollton seeks to remain a church where new people can get engaged in worship, service, and fellowship immediately. Bible Fellowship classes are small group gatherings that meet each week for purposes of Bible study and interactive fellowship with other believers. Members of the church are a family and strive to provide a nurturing and worshipful environment for all people who attend. Also, First Baptist Carrollton still emphasizes and practices missions work to the local community and around the world.
Our Future
Growth and excitement remains a part of First Baptist Carrollton's future as well. In 2001, the church purchased over 100 acres of land in far north Carrollton along State Highway 121. Thew new property will provide First Baptist Carrollton with the opportunity to grow and to reach even more people for Christ, not only in Carrollton, but in all of the surrounding communities as well.
This property provides possibilities that only God can discern The property right now is a vast amount of undeveloped acreage. We know that its potential will exceed all of our dreams and become an influence for Christ far beyond what any master plan can portray. The church continues to seek God's will and direction for building on the new land and excitedly waits for God to accomplish all that He has in store for First Baptist Carrollton now and in the future.
